Lower School students participate in a general music class of active music making, and in an age-appropriate chorus. Classroom music uses the Orff Schulwerk approach, in which children sing, move, and play pitched (xylophones, glockenspiels, metallophones) and unpitched (drums, shakers, metals) percussion instruments. Students in grades 2, 3 and 4 have a unit in playing the recorder. The music curriculum for all grades includes music composition using listening and improvisational skills as well as aspects of theory and tonal memory.
All students in grades 1 to 6 participate in the annual Christmas Concert and at least one other performance during the year incorporating music, movement, and drama. Often these performances represent a cross-discipline experience. In addition, students prepare and sing liturgical music for school liturgies.
Musical instruction for strings, woodwinds, percussion and brass instruments is available for students in grades 4 to 6 through the Instrumental Music Program. By mid-year these students are ready to form an orchestra/band and by the end of the school year treat the school community to concert.
