Oak Knoll launched a one-to-one laptop program in the fall of 2003 with the belief that anytime access to technology supports learning in a variety of ways. Faculty members have incorporated ad hoc research, in-class projects and academic software tools to support learning. All teachers have a laptop and projection in the classroom, allowing for visual support to the academics.
Students in grades 5 through 8 have individually-assigned laptops that are available for use on campus. They are able to check out their laptops from the classroom or technology lab each morning and return their laptops at the end of the year.
Students in grades 9 through 12 have a laptop that is theirs to use at home and school. Students are issued tablet computers at the start of ninth grade. This device is their responsibility and they will use it throughout their four years of high school. All laptops and tablet computers are PC based devices, running Windows XP. Software included on all machines: Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher, Flash, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Inspiration, Adobe Acrobat reader, and a variety of curriculum specific tools such as Vernier, Painter Pro, and Photoshop Elements.
“Out of Box” workshops are held in the beginning of each school year. These training sessions are required for all ninth grade students and any new student in grades 10 to 12.
