Diversity at Oak Knoll

Oak Knoll’s mission as a Holy Child school compels us to sustain a diverse, inclusive school community. Our mission charges us to educate students to honor the dignity of every person, to work for justice, peace and compassion, and to make responsible choices in a complex world. We foster cultural, socioeconomic, racial and religious diversity through a coherent system of administrative, academic, community and extracurricular programs. This commitment to embrace our differences is fundamental to our purpose and future.

Student Groups

International Awareness (7-12)
Learning more about world events in Africa, the Middle East, South and Central America, and Asia is the prime focus of this group. Discussing and proposing solutions for addressing the needs of the Third World is of particular interest to this group.

Junior Shades (5-6)
Jr. Shades Once a cycle, members of this Lower School group meet to talk about current topics and  share their own cultures in a group setting.  Activities include speaker presentations and fund raisers for our Holy Child sister schools in Ghana and Nigeria. Members also present multicultural topics at Friday Assembly and have multicultural lunches.

Shades (7-12)
At weekly meetings, members of this multicultural association share their own cultures in a group setting and discuss current topics about diversity. Activities include trips to conferences and visits to guidance classes to broaden the discussion of diversity at Oak Knoll. Members also present multicultural topics at school assemblies and sponsor programs to which other schools are invited.

Society of Black Scholars (7-12)
Students in grades 7 through 12 meet each cycle to discuss, organize, and plan activities and presentations that celebrate the culture and ethnicity of African-Americans. The students plan the assembly presentations that focus on the celebrations of Kwanzaa, Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday, and Black History Month. Oak Knoll’s Black Scholars join with Black Scholars at other independent schools to dialogue and socialize. Although the meetings focus on issues pertaining to African-Americans and their culture, all students are welcome.
