At Oak Knoll, tradition isn’t just about what we do — it’s about who we are. Rooted in our Catholic values and Holy Child mission, our community celebrates valuable experiences that nurture our hearts, minds, and spirits. Advent Angels, one of my favorite traditions, is a student-led celebration that brings the joy of giving, the power of faith, and the strength of community to life each December. This offers students the opportunity to participate in the season of quiet reflection, meaningful connection, and small acts of kindness that resonate far beyond the classroom. 

With the Theology Department selecting names anonymously, students write letters and provide hints to their secret Advent Angel, bringing in special gifts for them, and creating crafts for children at Overlook Medical Center. Advent Angels brings the community together in a spirit of giving and offers a moment for reflection before our holiday break. One of the Holy Child's goals states, “Holy Child Schools foster a faith commitment that leads to a joyous personal relationship with God…”, aligning perfectly with the purpose of Advent Angels.

The idea of Advent Angels originates from the season of Advent, which falls on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. This duration of time is set aside for the preparation and waiting for the birth of Jesus Christ. During Advent, Catholics prioritize traits of joy, love, and hope in order to guide their thoughts and actions throughout the day. This is a special time to reflect on the Catholic faith and share your generosity with others. At Oak Knoll, embodying the mission of an Advent Angel allowed me to show acts of kindness through gift-giving and help others feel appreciated during the holiday season. 

My senior year of high school made Advent Angels more significant because this tradition grounded me in the true meaning of Christmas. Advent Angels reminds us to bring love, faith, and happiness back into our community. I began finding joy in writing letters to my classmate, learning about Advent in Theology class, and seeing their reactions to my thoughtful gifts. The mutual exchange of gifts and letters created a special bond between classmates and strengthened the unity of our school community. 

Here at Oak Knoll, Advent Angels reflect who we are as a faithful, caring community. Our assemblies surrounding the season of Advent helped me grow spiritually and taught me the values we are to carry on as a Holy Child community. Each year, I look forward to participating in Advent not only because it’s fun, but because I want to give back to my friends, classmates, and community. The suspense, excitement, and love shared during these four weeks stay with me long after Advent is over. Oak Knoll’s traditions are something I always treasure, both as a cherished memory and a reminder of my faith!
