Cycling for a cause: Student-athletes raise $600 in memory of Oak Knoll alumna
By James McEvoy
Just days before Christmas, members of the Oak Knoll School basketball and swim teams joined together for a special charity spin class that raised $600 to benefit the Maureen Ellinwood Pluvinage ’99 Scholarship Fund.
Pluvinage died Monday, September 25, 2017, at University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, succumbing to injuries sustained in a cycling accident on Saturday, September 23, 2017.
The charity cycling class was organized by Kristin (McIver) Albarelli ’02, varsity swimming coach, and Katie Cummings ’03, varsity basketball coach, who both attended Oak Knoll with Pluvinage and her sister Catherine (Ellinwood) Nettleton ’00.
“Maureen exemplified everything that Oak Knoll stands for and I think it’s so important that our current students remember such an amazing person,” Cummings said. “Maureen was smart, driven and an amazing athlete and we wanted to honor her memory by doing one of her favorite activities – riding a bike.”
Cummings said Pluvinage and her family’s love for Oak Knoll was apparent when Maureen’s mother, Rosemary Ellinwood, attended the December cycling event and shared mementos with current Oak Knoll students, including Pluvinage’s OKS varsity letters and old photo albums.
Cummings said supporting the scholarship was an obvious way to honor the Ellinwood family for their years of love and support of Oak Knoll, while ensuring Pluvinage’s legacy will live on.
The fund is designed to allow other students of Pluvinage’s enthusiasm, intelligence and limitless potential the gift of a one-of-a-kind education at Oak Knoll.
Pluvinage, who was also a graduate of Dartmouth College and Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, most recently served as vice president of UBS in Zurich, Switzerland.
