Class of ’37 Graduates Kindergarten in Joyous Celebration
Christopher Starr

With songs, stories, and plenty of smiles, Oak Knoll’s Kindergarten Class of 2037 marked a joyful milestone this week as they celebrated their graduation in a heartfelt ceremony honoring their growth, accomplishments, and budding friendships. The event brought families, faculty, and staff together to recognize the incredible journey these young learners have taken — and all the promise that lies ahead.

Held in front of proud families, faculty, and staff, the celebration was rich with symbolism and spirit. Through meaningful songs, thoughtful choreography, and dramatic retellings of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Sower, the students brought to life the event’s overarching theme: growth, wisdom, and blossoming.

Lower School Division Head Christine Spies warmly welcomed guests and reflected on the remarkable progress students had made over the course of the year. She noted that the students have gone from stenciling letters to writing whole sentences and stories. They have gone from manipulating building blocks to solving math problems. And throughout the year, they have bonded, built friendships, and embraced being part of the Oak Knoll community.

This year’s ceremony held added meaning as it coincided with Oak Knoll’s historic centennial.

“One hundred years of educating children, looking at their gifts and talents, and helping them develop those unique blessings and see their place in the world,” Spies said. “We look at them as the shining light, as we look forward to the next 100 years.”

The celebration was filled with joy and inspiration. Students performed songs with lyrics such as, “Bloom. Bloom. Bloom where you’re planted. You’ll have your day,” and, ”Friends are like flowers, beautiful flowers. Friends are like flowers in the garden of life.”

Father Matthew Gonzalez of St. Bartholomew’s Parish in Scotch Plains presided over the prayer service, offering words of blessing and reflection.

“ Of these young learners, we are reminded of the seeds of knowledge and faith that have been planted within them,” he said. “We thank you for the gift of learning and the journey that has led them to this moment. May they continue to grow in wisdom and understanding, rooted in purpose, and guided by your light.”

Each child was individually recognized as Spies and Head of School Jennifer G. Landis presented certificates of graduation, met with smiles, applause, and plenty of proud photo moments. To close the program, students brought down the house by singing “New York, New York” — Oak Knoll style: “We’re spreading the news. We’re leaving today. We’re gonna be a part of it. First grade! First grade!”

Congratulations to the rising first-grade Oak Knoll Class of 2037! Your roots are strong, your future is bright, and we can’t wait to watch you continue to grow.
