Oak Knoll Honors Beloved Sister Marlene Brownett, SHCJ, at Teaching Mass
Meghan Hodgin

It was particularly appropriate that Oak Knoll’s Teaching Mass, held on September 6, 2024, in advance of the school’s historic Centennial Mass, was dedicated to the beloved Sister Marlene Brownett, SHCJ, who passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

Sister Marlene dedicated her life to crafting an excellent teaching and learning environment for Oak Knoll students over the decades.

Father Larry Evans II of St. Rose of Lima in Short Hills celebrated the Mass, taking the time to explain the meaning of each service aspect and the origins of its elements to the new students.

“The job of these teachers, this faculty and administration, is to give you the keys to learning,” he said during his homily. “We can learn the keys that will help us unlock the knowledge that we need to communicate with one another, to grow in understanding ourselves and the world.”

Sister Marlene devoted her rich and beautiful life to this cause — empowering students with the understanding necessary to make a difference in the world.

“Sister Marlene’s impact was felt far and wide,” said Head of School Jennifer G. Landis, “whether as Provincial Mother, an inspiring English and theology teacher, an active Board of Trustees member, or simply as a cherished friend, her presence made a lasting difference for all who knew her. She is fondly remembered for being an exceptional public speaking teacher, her insightful teaching of The Odyssey, and her compassionate spirit.”

Born on August 10, 1934, Sister Marlene graduated from Rosemont College in 1956 and became a Sister of the Holy Child Jesus in 1962. She joined Oak Knoll in the early 1970s, ultimately assuming the role of Reverend Mother. Although she retired in 2002, her connection to the school and the Oak Knoll community remained strong and loving. Sister Marlene will be greatly missed.
