Savannah Ramdass ’26 (pictured third from left) seized an incredible opportunity over the summer as she traveled to England to participate in the prestigious Oxford Tradition at Pembroke College, a constituent college of the University of Oxford.
Known for its rigorous selection process, the program accepts applicants after they submit a series of essays. Once accepted, the students choose a “major” and a “minor” class from myriad choices, including Medicine, Business, Psychology, Politics, or Law.
“I had trouble at first deciding between business, law and society, and creative writing as a major,” explained Ramdass. “I ultimately selected creative writing because it has been one of my strongest skills as a student.” For her minor, Ramdass was torn between criminology and speech and debate. “While the former seemed more exciting, I knew speech and debate would be more educational and useful,” she shared.
Ramdass has fond memories of her time in the program, describing it as a “phenomenal experience.”
She shared, “My favorite aspect of the program would have to be the people. I became friends with people as far away as Oman and Australia, and I have since kept in touch with them,” she said. “It was by far the best summer I have ever had, and I am so grateful that I got to be a part of such an amazing program!”
In addition to expanding her horizons through in-depth coursework, Ramdass participated in two debates throughout the month-long program: the first focused on the ethics of war, while the second tackled the themes of humanity and selfishness. Remarkably, she was part of the winning teams for both debates.
Throughout the year at Oak Knoll, Upper School Deans encourage students to embrace a variety of enticing academic, cultural, and artistic opportunities outside of the classroom, on breaks, and during the summer months. Kudos to Ramdass for dedicating a significant portion of her summer to intellectual growth and learning! Her experience exemplifies the enriching opportunities Oak Knoll Upper School continually encourages students to pursue.
