Upper School students honored for academic, athletic, artistic achievements

By James McEvoy
On the last day of the 2017-18 school year, dozens of Upper School students were recognized at the annual Upper School Awards Ceremony for achievement in the classroom, on the stage or field, and beyond.
During the ceremony, Class of 2018 Salutatorians Elizabeth Denehy ’18 and Christina Nguyen ’18 addressed their classmates, reminding them they will always be able to look back fondly on their days at Oak Knoll, despite the divergent paths their lives are about to take.

“The one thing to take away from this is that while we all experienced each day here differently, our time at Oak Knoll has created a bond that will last a lifetime,” said Denehy. “Remember that you are supported and loved. This is truly a place where you can live out ‘Actions, not words.’”

Nguyen reflected on her initial shyness at Oak Knoll, remembering how once as a second grader she was afraid she wouldn’t be accepted and thus declined an offer from a new classmate to have ice cream together.

“I responded, ‘I’m allergic,’” she said, noting she does not have, nor ever had, such an allergy. “Luckily, throughout my time at Oak Knoll, I’ve been blessed with a new-found confidence in myself as well as great friends, and at the same time, developed a love for ice cream.”

In keeping with her confectionary theme, she wished her classmates well as they move beyond the knoll.

“Accept that ice cream invite, try new things and don’t live in fear of what others may think and cherish what you have right in front of you,” she said.

Valedictorian Antonia Sylva ’18 will address the Class of 2018, their families, faculty and staff at Oak Knoll’s 90th commencement on Sunday, June 10, 2018.

Denehy, Nguyen and Sylva all also graduatea of Oak Knoll's coed elementary school.
