I came to Oak Knoll in the middle of my 6th grade year. The ultimate reason I switched schools midway through the year from Westfield Public School to Oak Knoll was because of COVID-19. I struggled with the hybrid schedule and was not paying attention to the Zoom classes. At that time, Oak Knoll was all in person, which seemed like a better option than my old school had to offer. Since it was COVID, and halfway through the school year, I didn’t get to tour Oak Knoll and knew nothing about it. I remember my mom setting up a call with another girl who lives in Westfield so she could tell me about the school since I knew nothing about it. The whole time she talked about the community and how everyone is so supportive and close, but I didn't think much of it when I was considering Oak Knoll. I was more interested in the athletic opportunities, clubs, and academic rigor. On my first day I was extremely nervous, I didn’t know anyone and didn’t know what to expect. Within minutes of getting there, everyone was talking to me and introducing themselves and it was only a couple minutes after that that I felt like I had known them for a long time. This is my 5th year at Oak Knoll, and I still feel that closeness and continuity with people in my grade and other grades. Whether in class, playing a sport, trying out for the musical, or creating a club I know that the Oak Knoll community will support me and cheer me on no matter what. That is just one of the many special parts of Oak Knoll and it is something that I am grateful for because it has led me to go out of my comfort zone, and it has made my middle and high school experience so much better.
